Also known as Rock Rose, Labdanum is the sticky resin distilled from the leaves and branches of the plant. It is a popular fragrance fixative in perfumery, being reminiscent of ambergris.

HISTORY OF LABDANUM ESSENTIAL OIL

The earliest recorded use of Labdanum was in the 9th century. Early Arabians used it medicinally in ointments and curatives but its use as perfume was first recorded in Ancient Egypt. Pharaohs wore false beards that were held together by this resinous oil, as well as being used in rituals and ceremonies. It was also mentioned in Biblical text, where Ancient Hebrews used Labdanum as part of the holy incense. In the Middle Ages, it was used in salves and ointments to treat conditions such as dysentery and respiratory complaints. It became an important commodity in commerce between the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Today, it is produced mainly for the perfume industry.
